In a world overflowing with health advice, diet fads, and conflicting nutritional studies, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. As Christians, we’re called to steward our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20), yet many of us are left trying to navigate this complex landscape on our own. The reality is that having an experienced, knowledgeable nutritionist in your corner can be the difference between thriving and unintentionally harming your body.
This post dives into why expert guidance is critical, the pitfalls of misinformation and overabundance, and practical steps you can take to honor God through wise nutritional stewardship. We’ll also explore something new and powerful that wasn’t in the podcast: the concept of “food discernment” as spiritual practice, and how it can help you make better choices every day.
You might be surprised to learn that many people unintentionally harm their health while trying to do the right thing. For example:
These examples highlight why good intentions are not enough. Without guidance, even well-meaning efforts to eat “healthy” can backfire.
One of the most surprising realities for me as a nutritionist is how woefully inadequate standard nutrition qualifications can be. To pass exams, I had to memorize information that I later discovered was incomplete—or even incorrect. For example, I had to learn that synthetic vitamins were equivalent to natural ones and that fortified cereals were a reliable source of nutrients. Over time, I had to unlearn these lessons and study deeper, functional nutrition principles, paired with both scientific research and biblical wisdom.
Mainstream education often reflects government guidelines or industry influence, rather than the nuanced, real-world application needed for optimal health. That’s why working with an experienced nutritionist—someone who has studied beyond the basic curriculum and applies practical, evidence-based knowledge—is so important.
Billions of dollars are spent every year shaping our perception of what is healthy. Marketing campaigns, social media influencers, and even seemingly well-meaning bloggers may unknowingly repeat industry propaganda.
For example, decades of messaging pushed vegetable oils as the heart-healthy alternative to butter. Now research shows that highly processed oils like soybean, canola, and sunflower are unstable and inflammatory, contributing to heart disease rather than preventing it.
Similarly, many “superfoods” promoted online can be overhyped, poorly understood, or harmful if overconsumed. Without guidance, it’s almost impossible for the average person to separate truth from marketing.
Unlike biblical times, we live with almost limitless access to food all year round. While this seems like a blessing, it has created a new set of challenges.
Proverbs 25:27 warns, “It is not good to eat much honey.” Even God-given, natural foods can harm us if consumed excessively. The modern challenge is that everything is available all the time, making moderation harder to maintain without professional guidance.
Here’s something new that we didn’t cover in the podcast: you can approach nutrition as a spiritual discipline, much like prayer, fasting, or meditation. I call this food discernment.
Food discernment is the practice of pausing before eating and asking questions like:
Over time, practicing food discernment helps you develop intuition and awareness, reduces dependence on willpower alone, and aligns your physical choices with your spiritual values. Pairing this with expert guidance from a nutritionist creates a powerful synergy: you’re not only learning what to eat, but also why it matters on a deeper level.
When seeking guidance, look for someone who:
Remember, just as we wouldn’t trust anyone to teach Scripture without discernment, we shouldn’t trust anyone to guide our health without proven expertise.
Working with an experienced, knowledgeable nutritionist helps you navigate this complex landscape, avoid common pitfalls, and honor God through your health choices.
