AI (Artificial intelligence) has exploded into everyday life almost overnight. From banking apps to job applications, research tools to writing assistants, AI is quickly becoming embedded into the way the world operates. But what implications does this have on our spiritual health?
While there are clear benefits to these tools, there are also real AI risks and AI dangers that Christians should carefully consider.

For believers, the conversation is not just about technology. It’s about spiritual health, discernment and wisdom.
Technology is never spiritually neutral. Every tool we use shapes our habits, our thinking and sometimes even our dependence.
So the question becomes: How should Christians use AI wisely without compromising their spiritual health?
In this episode of our Health in Faith podcast, I explored both the opportunities and the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. And while AI can be useful in certain contexts, there are three clear boundaries Christians should maintain if we want to protect our spiritual health.
Before we dive into those three things, let’s briefly acknowledge the reality we’re living in.
Whether you personally use AI tools like ChatGPT or not, you will almost certainly interact with them.
AI is already being used in:
In other words, AI is increasingly embedded into the infrastructure of modern life.
This means that simply ignoring it or pretending it doesn’t exist is not necessarily wise. Instead, Christians are called to respond with discernment, wisdom and clear spiritual boundaries.
The Bible consistently calls believers to discern the times and test what is good.
Technology may change, but that biblical principle does not.
So let’s look at three ways Christians should guard their spiritual health when interacting with artificial intelligence.
The first boundary is simple but incredibly important.
Christians should not seek spiritual advice from AI.
Artificial intelligence can summarise information. It can pull up Bible verses. It can organise research or explain theological ideas.
But it cannot provide spiritual wisdom.
Why? Because AI has no relationship with God.
It does not pray.
It does not seek the Holy Spirit.
It does not possess a soul.
At its core, AI is simply predicting words based on patterns in data. It may sound intelligent, but it is still an algorithm.
And this matters when it comes to spiritual health.
God designed spiritual guidance to come through:
Replacing those sources with algorithmic responses may seem convenient, but it subtly undermines the spiritual disciplines that strengthen our faith.
Yes, AI might sometimes give accurate answers about Christianity. In fact, when asked about historical evidence for religions, AI models often acknowledge that Christianity has strong historical grounding.
But accuracy is not the point. The issue is authority and discernment.
Christians already have access to the ultimate source of truth in Scripture and the living guidance of the Holy Spirit. Turning to AI for spiritual direction risks outsourcing discernment to technology rather than cultivating it ourselves.
That’s why protecting our spiritual health means keeping this boundary clear.
AI can assist with research, but it should never replace seeking God directly.

This may sound obvious now, but it’s becoming a very real issue.
One of the lesser-discussed AI dangers is emotional dependency.
AI tools are designed to respond warmly and conversationally. They can validate your thoughts, remember past conversations and offer reassuring responses.
They may even sound supportive and empathetic.
But here’s the crucial truth: AI is not a relationship. It is not a friend or a companion; because it’s not a human being, nor anything living for that matter.
Yet increasingly, people are forming emotional connections with artificial intelligence.
There are already:
This may sound strange, but it highlights a deeper human vulnerability.
People who feel lonely, misunderstood or anxious may find comfort in talking to AI because it responds positively and never disagrees harshly.
But the danger is that this simulated relationship replaces real human connection.
God designed us for community.
We were created for:
These are essential foundations of spiritual health.
Digital interactions can sometimes support connection, but they should never replace it.
Just as online church cannot fully replace gathering physically with believers, an AI conversation cannot replace real human relationship.
Protecting your spiritual health means remembering that technology can assist life, but it cannot replace the relationships God designed us for.

The third boundary may be the most important of all.
Christians must never trust or rely on AI more than God.
Artificial intelligence can appear incredibly capable.
It answers questions instantly.
It summarises complex topics.
It presents information confidently.
Over time, it can subtly become a kind of default problem-solver.
Instead of praying about a question, people may instinctively search for an AI answer.
Instead of seeking God’s wisdom, they may turn first to technology.
This shift may seem small, but spiritually it is significant.
Scripture reminds us:
“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” – Psalm 20:7
In today’s world, we might say:
Some trust in algorithms and AI models, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
Technology can be helpful, but it should never become the place where we ultimately look for wisdom, direction or security.
That belongs to God alone.
Maintaining this perspective protects our spiritual health in an increasingly technological world.
Recognising AI risks and AI dangers does not mean Christians must reject the technology entirely.
Like many tools, AI can be used wisely when approached with discernment.
For example, AI can be useful for:
But even here, wisdom is needed.
One important principle is triangulation of information.
This means verifying information from multiple independent sources rather than trusting a single source automatically.
This practice is standard in research fields and helps prevent bias or misinformation.
In practical terms, that means:
Discernment requires effort, but it protects both intellectual integrity and spiritual health.
We are living in a time of rapid technological change.
Artificial intelligence will likely continue advancing and influencing society in ways we cannot fully predict yet.
But the foundation for Christian living remains unchanged.
God calls His people to live with wisdom, discernment and faith.
That means asking important questions about the tools we use:
Not everything that is possible is beneficial.
Sometimes the most faithful response is simply setting wise boundaries.
If we keep our priorities clear, technology does not need to threaten our spiritual health.
Instead, it becomes just another tool that must remain firmly under God’s authority rather than replacing it.
If you take nothing else away from this discussion, remember these three boundaries for protecting your spiritual health in the age of AI.
Do not seek spiritual advice from AI.
Do not become emotionally attached to AI.
Never trust or rely on AI more than God.
Technology will continue evolving. But our ultimate source of wisdom, guidance and truth remains the same.
God is still the one who leads His people.
And in a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, maintaining that truth may be more important than ever.
