If you’re interested in how to boost energy naturally, you may have noticed something frustrating as you’ve got older. It often seems to take more effort just to feel normal. More coffee, more supplements, more determination. Yet somehow less energy. You wake up tired, experience brain fog during the day and find yourself relying on caffeine just to keep going. If that sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone.

Many Christians over 50 tell me they feel as though they’re constantly running on empty. They know something isn’t quite right, but they aren’t sure what to do about it. The common response is often to reach for another cup of coffee, hoping it will provide the boost they need. Yet despite the temporary lift, the fatigue often returns and sometimes feels even worse than before.
The problem is that many people are trying to solve an energy-production problem with a stimulant.
Let’s look at why coffee isn’t fixing the real issue and what your body may actually need instead.
This may surprise you, but coffee doesn’t create energy.
Now before I go any further, let me say that I enjoy coffee myself. I have a cup most mornings and I like the taste. Used sensibly, coffee can certainly have its place. However, many people have come to rely on it as their primary energy strategy, and that’s where problems begin.
Coffee can temporarily help you feel more alert. It can help you push through fatigue. It can even improve focus for a short period of time. What it cannot do is create energy inside your cells.
The real work of energy production takes place inside structures called mitochondria. These tiny cellular power stations are responsible for producing the energy that allows your body to function. Coffee does not repair sluggish mitochondria, nor does it address the reasons your energy production may have become impaired in the first place.
This helps explain why so many people find themselves reaching for another coffee at 10am, another at 2pm and then still collapsing onto the sofa by the evening. The issue is not that they need more stimulation. The issue is that their body is struggling to produce energy efficiently.
The goal should not simply be feeling more awake. The goal should be helping your body create more energy naturally.

One of the most overlooked causes of fatigue is unstable blood sugar.
Many people are riding a blood sugar rollercoaster without realising it. If you’ve ever experienced brain fog, afternoon energy crashes, strong cravings or sudden hunger shortly after eating, blood sugar instability may be contributing to the problem.
A typical breakfast for many people consists of tea or coffee alongside cereal, toast, jam or other high-carbohydrate foods. Initially this causes energy levels to rise. However, the body responds by releasing insulin to bring blood sugar back down. As blood sugar falls, hunger returns and energy often crashes with it.
This is why so many people find themselves hungry again by mid-morning despite having eaten breakfast.
Over time, repeated blood sugar spikes and crashes can contribute to insulin resistance and other metabolic problems that affect both energy levels and weight management.
One of the simplest ways to begin boosting energy naturally is to stabilise blood sugar. Increasing protein intake, particularly at breakfast, can make a remarkable difference. Protein helps slow the blood sugar response to food, supports satiety and often results in steadier energy throughout the day.
Many people discover that once they improve their protein intake, they no longer feel the same need for repeated cups of coffee.
Coffee can help you function…What it can’t do is help you recover.
Many people today are chronically under-slept, over-stressed and constantly pushing through fatigue. They wake up tired, work through exhaustion, rely on caffeine to keep going and then wonder why they never seem to feel truly well.
Eventually the body starts sending signals that something needs attention. Fatigue is one of those signals. Rather than seeing fatigue as the enemy, it may be more helpful to view it as a messenger. The body is often trying to communicate that it needs rest, recovery or support.
As Christians, this connects directly to the principle of stewardship. Stewardship is not only about managing money or time wisely. It also includes caring for the body God has entrusted to us.
If we consistently ignore sleep, operate under chronic stress and rely on stimulants to mask the consequences, we should not be surprised when energy begins to suffer.
An interesting marker that can sometimes reflect this imbalance is homocysteine. Elevated homocysteine levels are a health warning sign and can be associated with increased inflammation and cognitive decline, if left unchecked. It may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional if fatigue is persistent — I can help this and routinely run tests for my clients to check homocysteine levels, as well as other key blood markers (feel free to book a 1-1 call with me). While coffee itself is not the sole cause, excessive caffeine combined with stress and poor sleep can contribute to a less healthy metabolic environment.
The takeaway is simple: you cannot borrow energy forever without eventually paying a price.
This is the big idea behind today’s episode: Healthy metabolism is what creates energy.
Many people think of metabolism only in terms of weight loss. However, metabolism is about far more than the number on the scales. It is the process by which your body converts food into usable energy.
When metabolism is functioning well, people often experience better energy, clearer thinking, improved mood and greater resilience.
Healthy metabolism depends on several key foundations. It requires adequate protein, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, as well as movement and exercise and maintaining muscle mass, especially after 50. It also depends on sufficient recovery, sleep and stress management. When these foundations improve, energy production tends to improve as well.
This doesn’t happen overnight. However, over the course of weeks and months, many people notice that their baseline energy gradually increases. They wake up feeling more refreshed, start to experience fewer energy crashes and feel more capable of enjoying life and serving others.
This is why I often encourage people to stop asking, “How can I get more energy right now?” and start asking a different question: “How can I help my body produce more energy every day?” That question leads to very different choices.
Jesus said: “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” — John 10:10 (NKJV)
While this verse is primarily speaking about spiritual life, I believe it also reminds us that God’s desire is not for us to live in a constant state of depletion and exhaustion.
An abundant life includes having the energy, vitality and clarity needed to fulfil our responsibilities, serve our families and walk faithfully in our calling.
God did not design us to survive indefinitely on caffeine, stress and determination alone.
Wise stewardship means supporting the systems that create energy. It means nourishing the body, prioritising rest, managing stress and making choices that help us function well for the long term.
If you’re struggling with fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep or energy crashes, let me encourage you not to settle for masking the symptoms. Coffee may provide a temporary lift, but it rarely addresses the root cause. Instead, focus on the foundations of metabolic health:
These habits may not be as exciting as another cup of coffee, but they are far more effective at creating lasting energy The goal isn’t simply feeling more awake; it’s to help your body produce the energy it was designed to create.
If you’re tired of feeling tired and would like personalised support, I’d love to help. During a Metabolic Breakthrough Consultation, we’ll explore your symptoms, health history, lifestyle and goals. Together we’ll identify the hidden metabolic roadblocks that may be contributing to fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, cravings or stubborn weight gain.
Because often the answer isn’t another coffee, it’s understanding what your body has been trying to tell you all along, and then you can start to feel better and experience better energy day-to-day.
