In this powerful conversation, Justin Roethlingshoefer talks about his new book, Holy Health, and shares why biblical health stewardship isn’t a side issue—it is part of God’s design for His people. Discover how Scripture and science collide to reveal a cellular blueprint for healing, abundant life and faithful stewardship of the body God has entrusted to us.

For many Christians, holy health has become a forgotten conversation.
We faithfully pray for healing, believe God can perform miracles and desire to honour Him with our lives. Yet when it comes to caring for the bodies He has entrusted to us, many of us have unknowingly adopted the world’s approach rather than God’s design.
In this special Health in Faith podcast interview, I sit down with performance scientist, author and former elite sports performance coach Justin Roethlingshoefer to discuss his forthcoming book, Holy Health. Together we explore why the Church can no longer afford to separate spiritual life from physical health, and why understanding God’s incredible design for the human body should inspire both worship and wise stewardship.
Whether you’re struggling with fatigue, weight gain, chronic illness, brain fog or simply want to understand God’s design for abundant life more deeply, this conversation offers hope, wisdom and practical insight rooted in both Scripture and science.

One of the most powerful parts of Justin’s story is that he doesn’t speak from theory alone.
As a teenager, he battled anorexia, severe depression, anxiety, addiction, liver and kidney failure, obesity, burnout and numerous serious health challenges. Looking back, he now sees that each painful season allowed God to prepare him to minister to people facing similar struggles.
Rather than viewing those experiences as wasted years, he believes God redeemed them into a testimony that now brings hope to thousands.
His journey eventually led him through years of scientific study, earning advanced qualifications in human performance, physiology and cellular recovery before working with professional athletes, Olympians and elite leaders.
Yet despite reaching what many would consider the pinnacle of success, Justin sensed God calling him into something different.
As he explains, the Lord impressed upon his heart that after serving elite performers, it was time to begin serving His people.
That calling became the foundation for Holy Health.
One of the central messages throughout our conversation is beautifully simple.
Science and Scripture are not enemies.
When properly understood, they continually confirm one another.
Justin describes his work as bringing together two worlds that should never have been separated. As scientific discoveries reveal more about how the human body functions, they repeatedly point back to the extraordinary wisdom of God’s original design.
Rather than diminishing faith, true science often magnifies the Creator.
The more we understand the complexity of the human body, the more we are led to worship.
This perspective challenges the false divide many Christians have unknowingly accepted—that faith belongs in church while health belongs to science.
Instead, caring for our bodies becomes an act of biblical stewardship.
Many Christians quote that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, yet few stop to consider the practical implications.
If our bodies truly belong to God, then how we nourish them, move them, rest them and care for them matters.
Justin reflects on the words of Romans 12, reminding us that offering our bodies as living sacrifices is part of our worship.
Health stewardship isn’t about pursuing physical perfection.
Neither is it about chasing unrealistic body standards or becoming obsessed with nutrition.
It is about obedience.
God designed our bodies with extraordinary healing capacity.
Our responsibility is to work with that design rather than against it.
One of the most fascinating sections of our conversation explores a truth that many people overlook.
Health doesn’t begin with symptoms.
It begins inside our cells.
Every organ, tissue and system within the body is built from healthy—or unhealthy—cells.
When our cells struggle, eventually our organs struggle.
When our organs struggle, symptoms appear.
Many modern approaches focus on managing symptoms after they develop.
God’s design, however, points us towards creating an internal environment where healthy cells can flourish long before disease develops.
This shifts the conversation from simply treating illness towards cultivating health.
Justin explains that every cell requires three foundational things in order to function properly.
Without adequate oxygen delivery, cells cannot efficiently produce energy.
This is one reason why regular movement matters so much.
Exercise isn’t simply about burning calories.
It improves our body’s ability to deliver oxygen where it is needed most.
Rather than exercising purely for appearance, we can begin viewing movement as an investment in cellular health.
Walking, strength training, interval exercise and improving cardiovascular fitness all contribute to creating a healthier internal environment.
Our bodies are constantly exposed to toxins from food, air, water, stress and our modern environment.
Thankfully, God designed remarkable detoxification systems.
The liver, kidneys, lungs, digestive system and skin all play important roles.
However, Justin highlights something many people rarely consider.
Deep sleep is one of the body’s most powerful detoxification processes.
During restorative sleep, the brain activates specialised cleansing processes that help remove waste products accumulated throughout the day.
Without sufficient quality sleep, these processes cannot function optimally.
Far from being lazy, prioritising restorative sleep becomes an essential act of stewardship.
Cells cannot manufacture health without the raw materials required to do so.
Vitamins, minerals, amino acids, healthy fats and other nutrients provide the building blocks required for repair, energy production and healing.
While many people focus solely on calories, God designed food to provide nourishment, not simply fuel.
Justin also discusses the importance of understanding not only what we eat but what our bodies actually absorb.
Nutrient deficiencies can quietly undermine health long before symptoms become obvious.
One of the most thought-provoking insights from our discussion on holy health concerns God’s design for daily rhythms.
In Genesis, Scripture repeatedly says:
“And the evening and the morning were the first day.”
Justin suggests that many of us think backwards.
We often believe our day begins when we wake up.
Biblically, however, the rhythm begins the evening before.
This perspective transforms how we think about sleep.
Rather than treating bedtime as an afterthought, we begin preparing our bodies for restoration long before our heads reach the pillow.
Protecting our evenings, reducing stimulation, embracing rest and honouring God’s rhythm allows our bodies to carry out many of their natural repair processes while we sleep.
Perhaps the most challenging part of our conversation centres on the Church itself.
Justin observes that while churches rightly prioritise prayer, worship and discipleship, health stewardship has often become an afterthought.
Many Christians pray for healing while simultaneously living in ways that continually undermine the body’s God-designed ability to heal.
His challenge is not one of condemnation.
Rather, it is an invitation.
If we truly believe our bodies belong to God, then stewarding them should naturally become part of our discipleship.
Health should not become an idol.
Neither should it become ignored.
Instead, it becomes another area of faithful obedience.
One of the greatest misconceptions surrounding health is that caring for our bodies is primarily about appearance.
Biblical health has a much greater purpose.
Healthy bodies allow us to serve.
To love.
To lead.
To disciple.
To fulfil our calling with greater strength, energy and endurance.
When we have more energy, clearer thinking and stronger bodies, we are better equipped to carry out the work God has prepared for us.
Stewardship isn’t about living forever.
It’s about living faithfully.
If you’ve struggled with your health, perhaps you’ve wondered whether things can ever change.
Justin’s own story reminds us that God is able to redeem even the darkest seasons.
Healing often happens through miracles.
Sometimes it happens through faithful stewardship.
Often it involves both. This is what holy health is.
God has designed our bodies with extraordinary capacity to repair, recover and renew when we begin working with His design rather than against it.
That doesn’t guarantee instant healing from every illness.
But it does invite us into partnership with the wisdom of our Creator.
This conversation reminded me that health is not simply a physical issue.
It is a stewardship issue.
The remarkable complexity of the human body points us towards worship, not worry.
Every heartbeat, every breath and every healthy cell bears witness to the wisdom of our Creator.
As Christians, we are called not merely to survive but to glorify God in every area of life—including how we care for the bodies He has entrusted to us.
If the modern Church is to become healthier spiritually, emotionally and physically, perhaps it begins by rediscovering what holy health truly means.
